Meet a Mom: Catherine Brodsky of Sunshine CrossFit | Athletics in Bedford Hills
Northern Westchester Mom: Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?
Catherine Brodsky: I hail from the Midwest. I grew up in a small town in Indiana. I moved to Bedford from NYC after my son was born and we will have lived here for 8 years this month.
Northern Westchester Mom: How old is your son?
Catherine Brodsky: My son is Rypp and he’s 8.
Northern Westchester Mom: One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
Catherine Brodsky: My first career was in museum administration. I worked for a little over a decade at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and considered things like exercise a total waste of time.
Northern Westchester Mom: Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?
Catherine Brodsky: My husband! Since the moment Rypp was born, he’s been an incredible partner and our collective family rock.
Northern Westchester Mom: Favorite things to do with your kids?
Catherine Brodsky: I love exploring anything new with him: new places, new activities. This summer we got to do a bit of sailing together and conquer his fear of capsizing. Some of our best times are the simple ones like staring at clouds and making cookies. I cherish anything where we get to slow down and connect with one another.
Northern Westchester Mom: What is your working mom mantra?
Catherine Brodsky: Stay present, leave work at work, lean into the chaotic moments. My greatest challenge is schedule management: as a new business I never want to tell a client my time is full but the reality is that sometimes it is and in order to be present when I’m not at work I have to be careful to not overload myself.
Northern Westchester Mom: How did Sunshine CrossFit | Athletics come about?
Catherine Brodsky:It was all a bit of the right thing at the right time for a group of the right people! The pandemic had brought the existing CrossFit box I’d been working out at for years to a changing point. One of the coaches, Ana Montoya, and I couldn’t imagine life without this place that meant so much to us. I had been teaching Pilates for two years at that point, so I jumped in, got certified to teach CrossFit and we set about forging our dream gym.
My long-term plan had always been to add Pilates and CrossFit under one roof because I have been training in that way for a while and have experienced the incredible benefits and transformation it brought to my own body. Having been a person who was never athletic, hated exercise and considered herself genetically deficient in many ways, I knew once I found the combination of CrossFit and Pilates I wanted to give people an approach to fitness that was focused on taking care of themselves for their entire lives. I love to support any goal, from the simple to the ambitious because I know that with consistency and the right training mix the human body is capable of so much!
Northern Westchester Mom: How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
Catherine Brodsky: Without our community and the support of so many strong women and moms I would never be where I am today. The advice we give each other and the resources that you put out are so valuable to helping moms find the solutions they need.
