flu and cold tips

Guest Post by Dr. Patrick Hailey

During the thick of cold and flu season, people talk about the many ways for boosting immunity that can help defend yourself against the body aches and stuffy noses. As we embark on our first cold and flu season with COVID-19 present, it is more important now than ever to make sure our immune systems are functioning properly.

Ways to Boost Your Immune System at Home

At home, there are several different things you can do for yourself to help protect your body against bacteria and viruses. At home, you can incorporate these tips to try and keep healthy:

  • Focus on what you eat. Make sure you are incorporating foods high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for optimal health. Limit sugary treats and alcohol.
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
  • Add daily supplements like vitamin D, vitamin C, and a probiotic.
  • Minimize stress by doing things like journaling, meditating, and seeking help from mental health professionals when needed.
  • Wash your hands often and make sure you don’t touch your face with unclean hands.

In addition to all of these things, another good thing you can do for your immune health and seek out chiropractic care. In fact, a study done by Chiropractor and Manual Therapies found that a chiropractic adjustment can work to keep your immune system functioning properly all winter long.

Immunity and Spine Misalignment

When the spine is out of line, the body has to make up for the misalignment by compromising how other parts of the body are working. This is why a misaligned spine can cause pain in many different areas of the body — including the neck, hips, and knees. Further, it can also cause us to experience frequent illnesses because the immune system can’t function properly when the spine is sitting in the wrong position. Chiropractic care helps release pressure on the nervous system. When our nervous systems are affected like this, they can’t fight off common and rare infections — everything from the common cold to the highly-contagious flu. flu and cold tips

Keep Yourself Healthy this Cold and Flu Season

If you want to do all you can to stay healthy this fall and winter, consider seeing a local chiropractor to make sure your nervous system isn’t being compromised. By doing this, practicing good hygiene, and living a healthy lifestyle, you are setting your immune system up to be able to better fight off the sore throats and sniffles.
