Now that we are back in the swing of thing post Christmas break; let’s talk routines. Personally, I think kids thrive off them and I love having a structure to my day in an otherwise hectic life.
However, with three kids even the best laid plans typically goes out the window. In order to establish some semblance of order, I try to give the kids “jobs” so they can start to take responsibility for their stuff and encourage them to help out. This typically includes helping with dinner, picking out their clothes for school, making their beds, helping with laundry and general tidying up.
To help me out a bit, I’ve been testing out the new Octopus Chart, an adaptive daily routine chart for kids created by the Joy Family Tech, Inc. The colorful kid includes 175 magnetic icons that represents tasks, chores and time periods to help families and kids to foster responsibility, independence and self-esteem.
What I love is that the system allows everyone to see what is going on within a given week–taking some responsibility away from me for being the keeper of everyone’s schedules. We placed the magnetic icons on our fridge, outlining the week and everything we had to do with the icons that represented tasks and daily activities such as make bed, sleep, help with laundry, clean table, snack time, homework, walk dog, and so. I love how it charts everything in everyone’s day so that we can keep on track as well as look ahead at week and know what’s to come.
The kit also includes 525 activities and task, and chore themed magnetic icons (175 unique icons), reward themed magnetic icons, days of the week, time and blank customizable magnetic icons.
