Meet a Mom Interview with Carla Perl of Slumberland Solutions
Tell us more about Slumberland Solutions!
Carla Perl: Slumberland Solutions uses gentle sleep training methods and helps the whole family establish healthy sleep routines. Each customized plan includes information about the benefits and importance of sleep, recommendations for safe sleep spaces, and suggested wake times based on the child’s age. Also included in each plan is a detailed schedule and bedtime routine tailored specifically for each child, as well as techniques to handle crying at bedtime and in the middle of the night. We also discuss daycare, transition back to work, as well as any other challenges the family may be experiencing.
How did the idea come about?
Carla Perl: I am the mom of three children: two boys and one girl. I had my children very close together, and I realized early on that sleep was key to a smooth-running household (and my sanity). So I was very diligent about instilling good sleep habits in my children. To this day, my kids are all good sleepers and understand the benefits of a good night’s sleep.
As my family was growing, many of my friends would ask me how I was able to keep everything under control. I quickly realized that because I had such a consistent routine, my children always knew what was coming next, and bath time and bedtime struggles were few and far between. As my friends looked on, I started offering them support; helping them establish routines and giving them recommendations. This has led to my interest in becoming a Pediatric Sleep Consultant and the birth of Slumberland Solutions.
Why was it important for you to start this company?
Carla Perl: I get so much fulfillment out of helping family’s who are struggling with sleep. There is no need for anyone to have difficulties sleeping, and all babies and toddlers are capable of sleeping through the night with the proper tools and skills.
What are some services that you offer?
Carla Perl: I offer customized sleep training packages that are tailored to each family’s individual needs and challenges. I use gentle sleep training methods, which means that you respond more often when your baby or toddler cries. All babies will cry when you change their routine or habits, but HOW you respond to them is what I help you with. I work closely with each family to develop a plan that everyone is comfortable with.
What are some common misconceptions about babies and sleep?
Carla Perl: Many parents think it’s best to put their baby down already asleep. They also like to feed to sleep or rock to sleep. These create unnecessary sleep associations, and the baby doesn’t develop the necessary skills to put himself/herself to sleep.
How can parents find you? What areas do you serve?
Carla Perl: There’s lots of information on my website, slumberlandsolutions.com. You can also call or text me at (914) 391-8949 to discuss your child’s sleep challenges.
I’d love for you to follow Slumberland Solutions on Instagram and Facebook.
I live in Westchester County, and travel anywhere in the Tri-State area for In-Home Consultations. If you have friends or family needing my services, we can work virtually. All of my work can be done via email, phone, and video chatting, as well as in person.
What does a good sleep routine look like?
Carla Perl: A healthy sleep routine consists of age appropriate sleep times, proper distribution of naps during the day and overnight sleep. It’s also very important to establish a healthy bedtime routine that consists of dinner/feeding, bath, PJs, books, cuddle time, and then put to bed relaxed but awake.
What was your past life like before Slumberland Solutions?
Carla Perl: As a working mom, I understand the struggles of the work-life balance. I was in marketing for 15+ years. I am able to use my marketing background along with my understanding of being a working mom to help my clients establish a healthy routine that works for their whole family.
What are some of your favorite “me time” activities you like to do?
Carla Perl: Exercise is very important to me so I try to start every day moving. I love to be outside, weather permitting, so I run/walk with my dog. If it’s too cold or wet out, I take Spin and Barre Classes. As a family, we love to hike and my kids and husband love to ski (I never caught on, so my job has always been to “save the lunch table”when we ski).
What’s next for Slumberland Solutions?
Carla Perl: I hope to help families establish healthy routines all over the country and even worldwide!
